Storage Hints
- DO NOT store food items
- Use proper packaging to protect your precious items while being stored e.g. cartons, bubble wrap and packing paper. Winton Storage has all these items for sale.
- Plan your storage space. Place items you may need access to in the front and allow for walkways.
- List contents of boxes on all sides, number and seal with tape.
- Make an inventory of your stored items and keep in a safe place elsewhere.
- Use boxes, plastic bags or clothing bags for storing clothes.
- Stack lighter boxes on top of heavier ones.
- Always remove batteries when storing battery-operated toys, remote controls, torches etc.
- Drain petrol and oil when storing lawnmowers, weed eaters etc.
- Gas bottles must be empty and the valve left open
- Use bubble wrap for all mirrors, prints and paintings and mark “FRAGILE” and stack on end
- DO NOT store paint or any type of corrosive. Containers may break down and contents will leak over your furniture and into other units
Storage hints for Furniture
- Make sure all cupboards, drawers, dining and lounge chairs are cleaned of any food products as this can attract vermin
- Spray wooden furniture with a good polish. Cover with cardboard or a drop cloth
- Tables with removable legs should be ‘broken down’ to save space
- Use cardboard liberally inside the unit – use it to protect wooden furniture, and place under soft furnishings, mattresses, etc
- Do not set mattresses directly on the concrete floor, store on edge vertically
- Do not place heavy or sharp objects on top of upholstered furniture
- Keep all items off the floor if possible to allow air movement
Storage hints for Whiteware
- Fridges, freezers and any other whiteware should be cleaned and thoroughly dry before storing
- When putting these appliances into storage leave the doors slightly open
- Make sure items are not left on shelving as this can cause damage and marking on the linings
- Ensure water has drained from washing machine hoses before going into storage
Storage hints for Glassware and Dishes
- Protect fragile items by using packing paper or bubble wrap
- Fill any gaps in cartons with scrunched up packing paper as this alleviates movement inside the carton when it is being moved
- When stacking cartons make sure cartons with fragile items are always stacked on top.
- To avoid any confusion clearly mark “fragile" on cartons where needed.
Storage hints for Electrical and Electronic Equipment
- Plasmas, LCDs, stereos, surround sound systems, and computers should be wrapped with bubble wrap
- Plasmas and LCDs should be stored in their original cartons where possible and always stored on their edge
- If the appliance is not in the original carton then you can use scrunched up paper to fill up any gaps.
